Loose motion or diarrhea refers to the frequent passage of stools which are loose and watery. Watery bowel movements are very common and are usually not very serious. It may cause loss of water and minerals from the body. People may have diarrhea once or twice every year. The condition is more frequent in children. Loss of water from the body can cause dehydration. It also results in weakness, loss of appetite; stomach pain etc. loose motion usually lasts for 2-3 days and can be treated with home remedies or any over the counter medicines. In some people, diarrhea is a part of irritable bowel syndrome or occurs due to chronic disease of the large intestine. In such conditions medical treatment is necessary.
Causes of Loose Motion
There are many causes of loose motion. The important causes are
• Food poisoning or infection by bacteria
• Infection by other organisms such as parasites
• Allergies to certain food
• Foods that upset the digestive system
• Diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis
• Medications
• Overeating
• Malnutrition
• Certain medication
• Some cancers
• Alcohol abuse
• Stress or fright
Symptoms of Loose Motion
Depending on the complication of the problem, the symptoms of loose motion vary. The symptoms of uncomplicated or non-serious diarrhea includes
• Abdominal bloating of cramps
• Nausea and vomiting
• Watery or loose stool
• Sense of urgency to have a bowel movement
The symptoms of complicated loose motion include the above symptoms and the symptoms given below
• Fever
• Weight loss
• Blood or mucus in the stool
• Dark colored stools
You can treat non-serious loose motion using various home remedies for loose motion. You will have to contact a doctor if you have loose motion or fever for more than 24 hours and if you are unable to take even liquids to prevent water loss.
